guide for preparing and conducting clinical research study

Foreword

We are pleased to provide the 3rd edition of "Protomechanics" to the NIH community. Initially conceived by former Clinical Center Director Dr. John Decker, "Protomechanics" has provided a valuable tool to assist clinical investigators working at the NIH. The rapidly evolving requirements for proper preparation of a clinical research protocol make this edition of "Protomechanics" particularly timely.

The 3rd edition of "Protomechanics" was prepared in response to a request by the NIH Medical Executive Committee. Special thanks are extended to the Medical Record Department, Protocol Coordination Service Center, and Dr. John Decker, whose continued input throughout editing is greatly appreciated.

We hope the members of the NIH community will find this helpful in their clinical research activities.
